Can we have an honest conversation about the future? In the world of special needs, the future is filled with random acronyms, a lot of mumbo jumbo that’s tough to understand, and sitting on a couch waiting for the right supports. Is there hope? We think so, with the right understanding of what the future looks like for your child/adult with special needs. We encourage you to learn in these discussions now – it may take a while to come up with good solutions to fit your child and your family.
The first time I heard “the talk”, my twins were 3. I had just gotten their diagnosis, Autism, and was having difficulty processing what to do first, let alone consider their future. “The Talk” was about transition from high school to adult services. It was scary, confusing, maddening, and of course, overwhelming. I don’t like not knowing something that has to do with my kids, so I sought additional places where I could hear “the talk” about transition and adult services. It took me 4 different lectures for it to sink in what to expect.
